Why AI Doesn't Recommend Your Business (Even When It Knows You Exist)
When we scan a business for AI visibility, the pattern is almost always the same: the AI knows the brand exists and can describe it — but recommends it in roughly zero percent of relevant buyer questions. Knowing you and recommending you are two completely different things.
Recognition is not recommendation
Ask ChatGPT “what is [your business]?” and it will happily describe you. That feels reassuring — and it’s a trap. The question that matters is the one your buyers actually ask: “what’s the best [category] in [city]?” When we run those prompts, most businesses simply aren’t named. Competitors are.
Why the gap exists
- Inconsistent facts. When your category or location differs across the web, the AI hedges — and hedging means omitting you from a shortlist.
- Thin source presence. AI synthesizes recommendations from directories, reviews and editorial. If you’re not accurately present there, you’re not in the answer.
- No question-first content. You may have a great homepage, but no page that directly answers “best [category] in [city]” the way the AI wants to lift it.
- Weak trust signals. Few recent reviews and no visible expertise make the AI reach for a safer name.
How to close it
Baseline your recommendation rate, fix your facts everywhere, add schema, publish question-first pages for your top buyer prompts, and build off-site presence and reviews. Then track it monthly. The AEO Playbook walks through each step.
