Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) Explained
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) describe the same core discipline: getting found, understood and recommended by AI systems that generate answers. If you’ve heard both terms and wondered whether you need two strategies — you don’t.
Are GEO and AEO the same thing?
Effectively, yes. Both aim to make your brand part of AI-generated answers. The subtle difference is emphasis:
- AEO emphasizes the answer — being the recommendation a user receives to a question.
- GEO emphasizes the generative engine — optimizing content so large language models incorporate and cite it.
In practice the playbook is identical: consistent facts, structured data, question-first content, off-site presence, and measurement of how often you’re named. Pick whichever term your team prefers; the work is the same. We use AEO throughout this site.
Why there are two terms
The field is new and named itself twice. Academic and content-marketing circles coined “GEO,” while the search and local-marketing world leaned toward “AEO.” Some also use “AI SEO” or “LLM optimization.” Don’t let the vocabulary distract you — focus on the outcome: being the business the AI recommends.
What to actually do
Follow the AEO Playbook. Whether you call it GEO or AEO, start by understanding how answer engines choose who to name, then baseline your visibility with a free scan and work the fix plan.
